Term 2 Statistics

trand Math Sample

Level 3 Learning Outcomes:
- gain information from a variety of data displays.
- be aware of the type of data each display is appropriate for and the kind of pattern/relationship it best
communicates.
- link others’ claims with the appropriateness of displays used.

WALT: Sort data into categories

Wiremu is allowed to choose a pet for his birthday. He decides to find out what pets his classmates have.
He gives each classmate a blank data card, asks them to list any pets they have, and collects the cards.
With a classmate, discuss Wiremu’s data. Which information is necessary? Which information is unnecessary? Which data is difficult to interpret?

Make a comment on one piece of data from above:

Unnecessary group (why is it unnecessary?):because we don't need some of information they gave us

Hard to interpret group  (why is it hard to interpret?): it's hard to understand how many pets they have

WALT: Interpret and communicate findings about data

The class next door did a similar survey to the one above but they were asked to name their favourite pet.
The results are shown on this tally chart and then presented on the bar graph:

Write three statements that interpret the data shown above:
.
  1. cats are the most liked animal

  1. horse comes in at second

  1. The dog i thought that would be the most liked of them all it's certainly my favorite but it came at third

Discuss with a classmate which graph (bar graph or pie graph) you would prefer to use to show the
information and why?

I prefer the bar graph because it ctually tells you which animals there are.

What is the mean of the data above? (Show your working)

  1. 12+8+6+4=30
  2. 30 4=7.5

Personal Reflection: I can make statements about graphs. My next is to be able to read pie graphs.

Dear Mr Hipkins,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and state of mind you’ve done multiple amazing things over the years so why not add a few more to that grand list to make it bigger by donating some money to our school. We understand if you hesitate or don’t or can’t we perfectly accept something or nothing .what i'm saying is we can’t reach our full potential in this dastardly weather and here is why reason#1 the students in our classes start moping around the classroom and just lie around the place when their hot. reason#2 They become agitated and talk back to the teachers or the don’t listen to the teachers so as you can hear we would be very happy to receive donation for a cooling system.

Yours sincerely,

Edge Levi Dickson.
